HARRIMAN - The Cleveland State softball team took the extra large bats with them on Tuesday afternoon as they headed North to Roane State for a big Region VII Conference showdown with the Raiderettes.

When the dust had settled, the Lady Cougars had pounded out 14 hits including two homers in each game and had swept the doubleheader, 9-2 in game one and 7-4 in the second.

"I am very proud of the girls, it's hard to win on the road in this conference," explained Lady Cougar coach Katie Willingham. "We had 14 hits and we got good pitching in both games, Meaghan pitched great in the first game and Kenly did a good job in the second game especially coming back from an injury last week."

The Lady Cougars wasted no time in the first game as Shelby Hanson smashed a two-run homer in the top of the second inning to put the visitors on top early. Three batters later, Amber Covington dialed long distance for a three-run homer and just like that, with two swings, Cleveland State was on top 5-0.

Roane State chipped away at the lead with single runs in the third and fifth as Kat Bazel and Kristina Stephens singled in a run each. But, the Lady Coguars got those runs back and then some as Ashlen Mitchell singled in a run in the fourth and Sarah Goza and Kenzie Fish plated a run each in the seventh to put the finishing touches on game one.

The Raiderettes pushed a run across in the first inning of game two, but the lead didn't last long as Mitchell tied the game with an RBI double in the third and Halen Weeks put the Lady Cougars on top for good with a long two-run home run to right-centerfield for a 3-1 lead.

Hanson added a run to the Cleveland State totals with a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth and Fish tacked on three more runs with a long home run for a 7-1 advantage.

Jaylen Garrett doubled in a pair of runs for the Raiderettes in their last turn at the plate, but the rally would fall short as the Lady Cougars (15-15, 5-5) got the last out and completed the sweep.

Meghan Smith got the win in game one for the Lady Cougars striking out seven in her seven innings of work while Kenly Lambert picked up the win in game two allowing only one earned run along the way. Bridgit Cook and Morgan Page pitched for Roane State.

Mitchell led the way for the Lady Cougars with five hits on the day while Hanson, Lambert, Weeks, Fish, Sydney Howell and Casey Griffin all had two hits apiece.

"The girls did a tremendous job hitting," said Willingham. "Everyone in the lineup had at least one hit, just an overall great job."

The Lady Cougars will host Jackson State on Friday at 2:00 and Columbia State on Saturday at 1:00 for four big Conference games.

The Pioneers dominated game one on Saturday in all phases as the visitors scored 13 times on 13 hits and at the same time, starting pitcher Zac Curtis tossed a no-hitter at the Cougars allowing only four base-runners on walks while picking two of those off.

Volunteer State put single runs on the board in the third and the fourth as Tyler Noland hit a solo homer in the fourth for a 2-0 lead.

The wheels fell completely off the Cougar wagon as the Pioneers exploded for six runs in the fifth and five more in the sixth to finish game one in quick order. A pair of grand slams did most of the damage as Josh MaCurdy hit a long ball with the bases full of Pioneers in the fourth and Taylor Foster repeated the act an inning later.

Jared Burton took the loss for the Cougars while Curtis was unhittable in getting the win for Volunteer.

The Pioneers picked right up where they left off to start game two with a run in the first and another in the third on a sacrifice fly and a grounder to second for a 2-0 lead.

The Cougars managed to scratch out a run in the bottom of the third as a walk and singles from Damo DeMatteo and Grant Zawadzki loaded the bases with the run crossing while the Pioneers turned a double play.

The Pioneers stretched their lead in the fourth as two hit batters and a walk set the stage with a run crossing on a sacrifice fly and a groundout for a 4-1 Volunteer State lead.

The Cougars answered in the bottom of the fourth in a big way as six straight hits produced five runs and the first Cleveland State lead of the weekend. Sullivan doubled in a run while Hiefnar, Allen and DeMatteo singled in a run each to put the home team on top 6-4.

The Pioneers got a run closer on a single, two wild pitches and a sacrifice fly from MaCurdy in the fifth, and then tied the game in the top of the seventh on a single, an error, a groundout and a passed ball.

An extra inning was needed to decide the winner. A one-out double by Colby Harmon in the eighth put the Cougars in business and an RBI single from Derek Shugart sent the Cougar fans home happy as Cleveland State took game two, 7-6 and avoided the sweep of the series.

Thomas Huddleston pitched the seventh and eighth to get the win for the Cougars (22-13, 6-9). Robert Hansen took the loss for the Pioneers (19-17, 5-10).

On Friday, Josh MaCurdy shut the Cougars down for eight innings allowing only three hits along the way as the Pioneers built a seven run cushion.

Michael Massi and Brent Morris each doubled in a run in the first for the visitors while Ryan Johnson singled in another in the fifth for a 3-0 lead.

The Pioneers added two more in the seventh as Massi tripled in a run and Jonathan Allison singled in another and then tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth to extend their lead to 7-0.

Volunteer State would need every run as it would turn out as the Cougar bats finally came to life in their last turn at the plate.

Down to their last three-outs, the home team started a rally with a little help from Pioneer reliever, Anthony Thorn as he plunked Derek Shugart and Cody Commons to start the rally. Colby Harmon doubled in a run and a walk and an error plated a run while Colin Sullivan and DeAndre Allen each singled in a run to all of a sudden slice the lead to 7-4.

Ethan Davis added a pinch hit RBI sacrifice fly to make it 7-5, but the Cougar comeback would end there as the Pioneers finally recorded the last out leaving the bases full of Cougars

The Cleveland State baseball team used every trick in the book on Wednesday afternoon at Cougar Field as they took a pair of games from the University of the Cumberlands junior varsity team.

The Cougars (21-11) got great pitching from four different hurlers, allowing only three hits to win game one, 4-1 and then needed stolen bases, squeeze bunts, two-out hits and a walk-off homer to capture game two, 6-5 in their final at-bat.

The Cougars jumped on top in the first inning of game one as Michael Hargrove checked in with a two-out single to plate Cody Commons who had singled and stole second ahead of him for a 1-0 lead.

Cumberland tied the contest in the third on two singles and a fielders choice, but the Cougars regained the lead an inning later. Devin Fish and DeAndre Allen each singled and stole a base to get into scoring position. Fish then scored on the back end of a double steal and Allen crossed on a perfectly placed squeeze bunt by J.D. Cowart for a 3-1 advantage.

Hargrove and Colin Sullivan each singled in the fifth, moved up on a sacrifice bunt from Fish and an insurance run crossed on a single from Allen.

Cade Seeley singled in a run for the home team in the second to tie the game, Damo DeMatteo scored on the back end of a double steal attempt and Grant Zawadzki pushed another run across with a roller to third to give the Cougars a 3-1 lead.

A two-run homer from John Goodman tied the game once again in the third, but the Cougars seesawed right back on top an inning later as Seeley and Michael Lyons both singled stole a base and came around to score on an error and a sacrifice fly from Zawadzki to put their team back on top 5-3.

Cumberland just kept coming back as they tied the game again with a run in the fifth on a double by Antonio DeSilva and an error and two wild pitches in the sixth.

Perimeter tied the game on a Christopher Madera RBI single in the third, but the Cougars got that run back in the fourth on back to back doubles from Edwards and Michael Hargrove to take a 2-1 lead.

The Cougars tacked on two more runs on one swing of Damo DeMatteo's big bat as Derek Shugart doubled and scored in front of DeMatteo's dinger to push the lead to 4-1. Georgia Perimeter added and unearned run in the sixth, but the Cougars slammed the door to take game one.

Ethan Davis got the win on the hill for the Cougars (8-4) tossing five innings and scattering only four hits. Tyler Kilgore tossed an inning in relief and Thomas Huddleston pitched a perfect seventh to pick up the save. Mikolay Uherek took the loss.

Game two was short and to the point as three Cougar pitchers overwhelmed their guests to twirl a neat three-hit shutout. Zack Taylor got the win and gave up one hit in hit two innings, Hunter Hammond tossed two scoreless innings and Ross Spurgeon threw the final three innings and didn't allow a hit to finish the shutout and pick up the save. Andy Threatt pitched well for Georgia Perimeter, but took the loss.

J.D. Cowart provided all the runs that the Cougars would need with a two run single in the bottom of the third while the third run crossed on the back end of a double steal. Colby Harmon and Michael Lyons each drew a walk while Colin Sullivan singled to start the rally in the third.

The Cougars will open conference play this weekend with a trip to Chattanooga State.

The Cleveland State baseball team settled for a split of their Saturday afternoon twinbill with the Highlanders of Gordon College at Cougar Field. The Cougars came from behind twice to take game one by a final score of 6-4, but the visitors scratched out a run late in game two to win, 4-3.

Gordon jumped on top in its first at-bat in game one with a pair of runs as Grant Massey doubled in a run with another crossing on a sacrifice fly. The Cougars got those two runs right back in the bottom of the second on a Highlander miscue and a grounder to second base from Damo DeMatteo.

Another Massey double put the visitors on top in the third, but the Cougars responded with two more in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-3 lead. Cleveland State tacked on a single run in the fourth and fifth on a sacrifice fly from DeAndre Allen and a bases loaded walk by Derek Shugart for a 6-3 advantage.

Gordon got a run closer in the sixth, but that would be the extent of their rally as the Cougars took game one. Tyler Sexton tossed the first five innings for the Cougars (6-4) to pick up the win while Tyler Kilgore pitched an inning and Thomas Huddleston pitched the seventh to get the save. Andrew Fessler took the loss for Gordon.

The Cougars got two of those runs back in the bottom of the first as on a grounder to short from Colby Harmon and an RBI single by Michael Hargrove. Cody Commons doubled and scored an inning later on a single from J.D. Cowart to tie the game at 3-3.

Pitching took over after that for both teams until the sixth. Michael Stemie walked, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and then stole home with the winning run. The Cougars got the tying run as close as third base in their last at-bat, but left him stranded and had to settle for a split of the days events.

Hunter Hammonds, Jeb Scoggins, and Ross Spurgeon all pitched for the Cougars while Marcus Hunter suffered the loss. Kenny Anderson was the winning pitcher for Gordon College.

Chris Goarsmel, Joe Curatolo held the Cougars in check until the bottom of the seventh when David DeSantiago gave up the unearned run to take the loss.

Grant Zawadzki led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk to start the Cougar rally. Damo DeMatteo bunted him to second, but a wild throw by the Lions allowed Zawadzki to come all the way around to score the only run of game one and capture the 1-0 win.

The Cougars broke out the big sticks in game two. Chase Edwards singled, stole second and scored the first Cleveland State run in the second inning on a single from Zawadzki. Michael Lyons plated the second run with a grounder to second for a 2-0 lead.

WALK-OFF GRAND SLAM BY HARMON PROPELS COUGARS TO WIN

The beauty of baseball was on display on Saturday at Cougar Field as Cleveland State hosted the Vincennes University Blazers for a doubleheader. The Blazers took a 1-0 pitchers duel in game one and then on the complete other end of the spectrum, the Cougars needed a walk-off grand slam homer in the second game to win a wild one, 9-8 to gain a split of the days action.

Game one was an old fashioned pitchers duel as Ty Simpson for the Blazers and Tyler Sexton for the Cougars locked horns and proceeded to retire hitters with relative ease through the first five innings.

The Blazers finally broke the ice in the top of the sixth as they scratched out a run to take the lead. A one-out double by Lucas Ray started the rally. A hit batter and a walk then loaded the bases for Drew Rossbottom who knocked in the run with a high chopper to third for an infield RBI single and a 1-0 Vincennes lead.

The Cougars threatened to tie the game with a pair of singles from Damo DeMatteo and Derek Shugart in the bottom of the sixth but Simpson was able to wiggle out of the jam and then work around a double from Colby Harmon in the seventh to secure the win.

Sexton took the loss for the Cougars while Tyler Kilgore pitched in relief. Simpson went the distance for the Blazers to get the win.

The Blazers took the lead in game two with three runs in the third on an error a sacrifice fly and RBI singles from Steve Lowden and Drew Rossbottom. Cody Commons scampered home in the bottom of the frame during a rundown play for a Cougar run, but the Blazers extended their lead with two more in the fourth and another in the fifth for a 6-1 lead.

The Cougars got closer with a three spot in the sixth as Devin Fish plated a run with a grounder while three wild pitches and a passed ball aided the Cleveland State cause as they cut the lead to 6-4. Cleveland State gave two of those runs back in the top of the seventh as the Blazers tacked on a pair of unearned runs.

Down to their last at-bat, the Cougars didn't give up. Cody Commons and J.D. Cowart each took one for the team to reach base and start the rally. An RBI single from Fish drew the Cougars a run closer and with the bases full of Cougars, third baseman Colby Harmon became the man of the moment as he dialed long distance for an incredible walk-off grand slam home run to send the Cougar faithful home happy.

"Game one was a well pitched game on both sides," stated Cougar coach Mike Policastro. "We had our chances, but it didn't work out. Game two was a wild one and we were fortunate to come out with a win. The guys stuck with it after we got way down and didn't give up and we got some good relief pitching, but it was an amazing finish."

Ross Spurgeon was the winning pitcher for the Cougars (3-3) while Hunter Hammond, Jeb Scoggins, Thomas Huddleston and Ethan Davis all pitched in relief. Christian Leffler took the loss for the Blazers.

Beautiful spring-like weather greeted the Cleveland State baseball team on Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Field as the Cougars dove head first into the 2012 baseball campaign with a doubleheader against Roane State. It couldn't have started much better for coach Mike Policastro and his team, as the Cougars handed the Raiders a pair of losses, 6-2 in the first game and 3-2 in the second.

"It was a good start to the season," stated Policastro. "We swung the bats well and were able to get a lot of guys a couple of innings of work on the mound and for the most part they threw strikes and got ahead of the hitters. We only gave up 5 hits in two games and had 14 punchouts, so we were happy with the pitching."

Roane jumped on top in the first inning of game one as a run crossed on a wild pitch. The Cougars got that run back in the bottom of the first as DeAndre Allen singled, stole second and later scored on a double by Cody Hiefnar.

The Raiders regained the lead in the second on a Cougar miscue, but Cleveland State tied the game again with a run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Derek Shugart.

The Cougars put game one on ice in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run outburst. Shugart singled in a run, Grant Zawadzki singled and later stole home on the back end of a double steal with Shugart while the third run crossed on a Raider error for a 5-2 lead. Shugart singled, stole second and later scored on another Raider miscue in the sixth to tack on an insurance run.

Hunter Hammond started the game for Cleveland State on the hill while Tyler Sexton tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the win. Derek Chandler tossed two scoreless innings as well while Tyler Kilgore pitched the seventh to pick up the save. Casey Bouilere-Howard started for the Raiders while Tyler Annett took the loss.

The Cougars put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the third to take the lead in game two. Damo DeMatteo walked and Cody Commons took one for the team to get the inning started while Hiefnar and Colby Harmon added an RBI single each to the cause for a 2-0 lead.

The Raiders scratched out single runs in the fourth and sixth to tie the game as Demond Tubbs knocked in a run in the sixth while a walk, a stolen base and a groundout produced a run in the fourth.

Randall Coley drew a pinch hit walk for the Cougars in the bottom of the sixth and Shugart pinch ran and promptly stole second to put the winning run in scoring position. Colin Sullivan then came up with a clutch one-out single to push the go-ahead run across.

Thomas Huddleston came on to toss a scoreless seventh for the Cougars and slam the door on the Raiders for the save. Ross Spurgeon started and tossed two scoreless innings, Zack Taylor and Ethan Davis threw the middle four innings and Jeb Scoggins pitched in the sixth to pick up the win. Tyler Gillum started for Roane State (0-2) while Brenton Bates took the loss.

The Cougars (2-0) banged out 12 hits in game one and 17 in the twinbill while allowing the Raiders a total of five on the day.

"Ross got us off to a good start in game two, but Roane fought back and tied it twice," said Policastro. "But we were able to scratch out a run in the sixth and get the win. It was two good games. We had 12 hits in the first game and then got the hit when we needed it in the second. So, overall it was a good way to start the season."

The Cougars will hit the road on Saturday for a pair of games at Georgia Perimeter in Covington, Georgia.

MILLINGTON - The Cleveland State baseball team traveled to the other side of Tennessee over the weekend and captured two of their three Region VII Conference series games from the Southwest Tennessee Saluqis.

The Cougars staged a dramatic late-inning come-from-behind win on Friday afteroon, 7-6 and then split a doubleheader on Saturday winning game one 12-3 and dropping a heartbreaker on the back end of the twinbill, 4-3.

The Saluqis pushed a run across in their first at-bat in game one, but the Cougars got that run back in the top of the third as Damo DeMatteo doubled, stole third and scored on a single from Derek Shugart.

A Saluqi miscue and a two-run safety from Shugart finished the uprising and tied the game at 6-6.

With the Cougars just three outs away from a series sweep, the wheels fell completely off their wagon in the bottom of the seventh. An error, a slow roller in a perfect spot and a hit batsman set the stage for the Southwest rally. RBI singles from Burk and Alonso Powell tied the game and another Cougar miscue allowed the winning run to cross as the Cougars had to settle for 2-3 in the series.

Thomas Huddleston (0-1) suffered the loss for the Cougars while Jerry Tatum went the distance to get the win for the Saluqis.

LYNCHBURG - Motlow State and Cleveland State finally finished a marathon weekend of baseball on Saturday afternoon as the Bucks took two of the three games in the TCCAA Region VII matchup.

The Cougars led in all three games, but couldn't hold on as they split a doubleheader on Friday and then lost a heart-breaker on Saturday, 9-8. Extra innings were needed in both ends of the Friday twinbill as Cleveland State took game one of the series with a dramatic win, 5-3 in eight innings, but lost game two in 12 innings 7-6.

The defense on both sides was less than sparkling in all three games as the two teams combined for 18 miscues (7 Cougars and 11 Bucks) in the three games, but offense was not lacking as the Bucks pounded out 29 hits while the Cougars (23-15, 7-11) countered with 21.

Chase Edwards doubled in a pair of runs on Saturday as the Cougars took a 3-0 lead in their first turn at the plate. The Bucks bounced right back with four runs on three hits and two Cougar miscues in the bottom of the first.

Edwards put the Cougars back on top in the third with another two-run double and Damo DeMatteo and Derek Shugart added an RBI hit each to give the visitors a 7-4 advantage.

The Bucks picked up a run in the third on an error and two more in the sixth to tie the game and then pushed another run across in the seventh to take an 8-7 lead.

Devin Fish doubled in a run for the Cougars in the eighth to tie the game once again, but again the error bug bit the Cougars as the winning run crossed in the bottom of the ninth on an error after a walk and a sacrifice bunt.

Joey Falletta got the win for the Bucks while Ethan Davis took the loss for the Cougars in relief of starter Ross Spurgeon.

Game one on Friday was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when Thomas Lundborg singled in a run to put the Bucks on top 1-0.

The Cougars tied the game an inning later as Cade Seeley drew a walk and came around to score on a fielders choice by Devin Fish.

Kenneth Perkey put the home team on top in the bottom of the sixth with a 2-run single, but two Buck errors in the top of the seventh allowed the Cougars to tie the game once again and force extra innings.

Michael Hargrove provided the winning cushion for the Cougars in the eighth with a two-run homer after a double from Colby Harmon and Thomas Huddleston came on to shut down the Bucks in the bottom of the frame to finish game one and pick up his seventh save of the year.

Game two was a seesaw affair from beginning to end and was destined to be a 12-inning marathon. Hargrove lifted a sacrifice fly in the first to give the Cougars a lead and Harmon singled in a run in the third for a 2-0 lead.

Motlow put a run on the board in the third and again in the sixth on a solo homer by Cory Mitchell, but the Cougars took a commanding lead with a run in the fourth on a single by Seeley and three more in the fifth on an error and a two-run single from Edwards for a 6-2 advantage.

After taking a slugfest, on Friday by a 13-7 final score, the Senators swept a doubleheader and the series on Saturday by a score of 5-1 in the first game and 1-0 in the second.

The Cougars jumped on top to start game one on Saturday. Michael Hargrove singled in the bottom of the second and eventually moved around to score on a single by DeAndre Allen for a 1-0 Cleveland State lead.

The Senators tied the game in the fourth as three Cougar miscues pushed a run across.

Walters State finished game one in a big way as Marcus Davis homered to lead off the sixth and Josh Coker cleared the bases with a three-run triple as the visitors took game one of the day.

Josh Peterson went the distance for the Senators allowing only four hits while Ross Spurgeon (2-3) took the loss.

Game two was the polar opposite of the first game of the series as Dale Innes for the Senators and Jared Burton for the Cougars locked horns in a pitcher's dual. Innes allowed only one hit over his five plus innings of work and reliever Chase Cunningham allowed only one hit as well. Burton held the powerful Senators lineup to only three hits and gave no earned runs in seven innings of work.

The only run of the game crossed in the second inning as Mike Davis reached on an error and scored on a double by Reid Matthews for a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars got a runner as close as third base only once in the game in the second inning and stranded a pair of walks in the fifth and another walk in the sixth. DeAndre Allen singled to lead off the seventh and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position, but a line drive by Ethan Davis that seemed like a sure hit turned into a game-ending doubleplay as shortstop Kendall Keeton snared the shot and tossed it to second to end the rally and complete the Walters State sweep.

Innes got the win, while Cunningham picked up the save for the Senators and Burton took the tough loss.

On Friday the Cougars out-hit their guests 19-10, but where it counted on the scoreboard the home team scored six less runs and added to the problem with seven errors and 15 Cougars left on base.

The Senators pounded out eight runs in the first four innings as Marcus Davis singled in a run in the first and four more crossed in the second on three Cougar miscues. Mike Davis and Ryan Webster each knocked in a run in the fourth and Colin Bennett hit a solo homer in the sixth to extend the lead.

Trailing 6-0 in the third, the Cougar bats came to life. Derek Shugart doubled to start the outbreak and Devin Fish added a single to the cause. Chase Edwards singled in a run, Colin Sullivan and Randall Coley followed with an RBI single each while another run crossed on an error to cut the lead to 6-4.

The Senators put the game out of reach in the eighth as four more runs crossed on two Cougar errors and a solo homer by Mike Davis to push the lead to 12-4.

Cleveland State made some noise in the bottom of the eighth as Sullivan, Ethan Davis and Coley all knocked in a run, but it was not enough as the Senators held on for the win.

Jon Reed got the win for Walters State while Milan Mantle pitched in relief. Tyler Sexton (2-6) took the loss for the Cougars while Hunter Hammonds and Zack Taylor pitched in relief.

JACKSON - The Cleveland State baseball team traveled to West Tennessee over the weekend for a three game Region VII
Conference series with the Jackson State Generals. The Cougars scored first in all three games, but as it would turn out, that would
be the highlight for the visitors on the long road trip as the Generals defended their home field in a big way.

Jackson State pounded Cougar pitching all weekend long to the tune of 41 hits and 43 runs as they swept their guests right out of Jackson by scores of 13-3 and 19-8 in Friday's doubleheader and then finished the series with a 11-5 win on Saturday.

Michael Hargrove got the Cougars off on the right foot in game one on Friday with a solo homer in the top of the second inning
for a 1-0 lead. A two-run triple by Jess Messick in the bottom of the frame highlighted a six-run outburst by the Generals as they jumped out to a 6-1 advantage.

The Cougars put two runs on the board in the fourth on an error and a doubleplay, but a three-run blast by Juan Rivera extended the
Generals lead to 10-3 and put the game out of reach. Wes Parsons got the win while Jared Burton (1-3) took the loss.

Derek Shugart singled and Devin Fish doubled him home in the top of the first to start game two for the Cougars. Chase Edwards doubled in Shugart who had singled in the third and Hargrove knocked in another run as the visitors took a 3-0 lead.

Once again, the Generals came back in a big way as back to back doubles from Chris Jeffries and Kane Barrow highlighted a five-run third inning as the home team took a 5-3 lead.

The rains came after that and play was suspened until Saturday. It didn't get any better though, for the Cougars as the Generals just kept
on hitting with five more runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and seven more in the seventh to finish game two. Four Cougars errors and five RBIs from Richie Pearl did most of the damage.

Fish added a two-run single for the Cougars in the fourth as the visitors briefly tied the game and Hargrove hit his second homer in as many games leading off the fifth, but it wasn't nearly enough as the Generals took game two. Ross Spurgeon started for the Cougars on the hill while Tyler Sexton (2-7) took the loss. Jeb Scoggins, Marcus Hunter and Justin Sturgeon all pitched in relief. Alex Martin went the distance to get the win for Jackson.

Fish doubled and scored on a wild pitch in the first inning of game three to put the Cougars on top 1-0 once again, but just like the previous two games, the Generals came charging back.

Barrow put the Generals on top for good with a two-run single in the bottom of the first. The home team tacked on three more runs in the fifth on a wild pitch and a groundout and two more in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead.

Fish knocked in another run in the seventh with a single and Shugart doubled and later scored on passed ball as the Cougars cut the lead to 7-5, but just like they had done all weekend long, the Generals finished strong with four more runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach and complete the sweep.

Taylor McGrath got the win for the Generals while Ethan Davis (4-2) took the loss for the Cougars. Tyler Kilgore and Thomas Huddleston pitched in relief.

The Cougars will travel to Volunteer State on Tuesday for a pair of non-conference games and then finish the regular season as Columbia state comes to town over the weekend.

NATIONALLY RANKED CHARGERS TAKE TWO OF THREE FROM COUGARS

Sunshine and blue skies greeted the Cougar baseball team as Cleveland State and Columbia State completed their last regular season Region VII Conference games at Cougar Field with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader.

The Nationally 4th ranked Chargers took two of the three game set winning game one on Friday, 9-0 and the back end of the Saturday double dip, 3-2 while the Cougars pulled off the upset in the middle game on Saturday with a 3-2 win.

The Cougars took an early lead in the first game on Saturday as three straight singles in the bottom of the second produced a run. Michael Hargrove singled and later scored on a single from Colby Harmon for a 1-0 Cougar advantage.

The Chargers jumped on top in the fourth with one swing of T.J Diffenderfer's bat for a two-run dinger and a 2-1 lead.

The Cougars tied the game in the bottom of the fourth as Damo DeMatteo did the damage with an RBI single. Cleveland State then scratched out what would be the winning run an inning later as once again three straight singles from Derek Shugart, Devin Fish and Chase Edwards loaded the bases. Shugart crossed the plate as Hargrove lifted a run-scoring fly to right field to put the home team on top to stay.

Ross Spurgeon went the distance to pick up the win scattering only five hits along the way. Chris Orphanos took the loss.

In the rubber game of the series, the Cougars once again jumped out front with a pair of runs in their first turn at the dish. A one-out single from Fish started the uprising and a two-out single from Colin Sullivan plated the first run of the contest. A pick-off attempt by the Charger catcher at third base would up in left field as Hargrove scampered home for a 2-0 Cleveland State lead.

The Chargers managed to tie the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. A free pass, a single and a sacrifice bunt put the visitors in business with runners on second and third for Preston Carter who singled in both runs to knot the game at 2-2.

The Chargers took their first lead of the day an inning later as Diffenderfer squeezed an RBI double inside the third base bag to give his team a 3-2 lead.

That would be all the run support that Charger starter D. W. Whitson as he went the distance allowing only five hits to pick up the win. Ethan Davis suffered the loss for the Cougars.

On Friday, Lucas Laster dominated the game from start to finish as the Charger hurler tossed an almost perfect one-hit nine inning shutout at the Cougars. Laster allowed only two Cougars to reach base, both coming in the seventh frame as Devin Fish picked up the only Cleveland State hit with a single and Hargrove reached on an error.

The Chargers took the lead with four in the fourth as Derrick Armstrong and Lucas Pippenger knocked in a pair of runs each. Armstrong added an RBI double in the sixth and the visitors tacked on three more in the ninth which would be more than enough for Laster as he secured game one of the series.

Laster got the win while Jared Burton (1-4) took the loss for the Cougars. Hunter Hammond, Tyler Sexton and Zach Taylor all pitched in relief.

The Cougars will now turn their attention to the Region VII Conference Tournament to be held at Chattanooga State starting on Sunday May, 5th.
